It is recommended that your child visit the dentist for the first time within six months of the arrival of their first tooth, or by the time he or she turns 2. Many pediatric dentists recommend that a child visit the dentist for the first time by age 1.
During this initial infant exam, our dentist will discuss with you your child’s oral health, and the steps needed to make sure he or she remains healthy. Our dentists will provide information and instruction on how to care for an infant’s or toddler’s mouth, including:
- How to properly use fluoride
- Oral habits (including thumb sucking)
- Teething and other developmental milestones
- Ways to prevent accidents that could damage the face and teeth
- The link between diet and oral health
- Factors that affect the risk of cavities
- Soft tissues (such as cheeks and gums)
Our dentist will also create a schedule of follow up visits, usually once every six months, to monitor your child’s oral growth and development.
If your child is a toddler, our dentist will gentle examine their teeth and gums to check for decay and other problems, and may provide a dental cleaning.
